District Court civil jurisdiction increased to $350k

As of 1 March 2017, the amount claimable in the District Court will increase from $200,000 to $350,000 (The District Court Act 2016). This is a significant increase. Presumably, it will mean more civil proceedings in the District Court, particularly now that summary judgment is back on the option list. It remains to be seen whether if this does happen, the courts will receive additional resources to cope with any increase. The path towards paperless courts has also been widened (Electronic Courts and Tribunals Act 2016), although more work needs to be done before this can be fully achieved. A mindset change will also be necessary, as most lawyers are used to the rules of evidence surrounding admissibility of documentary evidence. But any moves away from the paper-heavy trials of yesteryear are welcome.
